T consider myself an educator. T doa lot of writing, éditting, give
presentations, organize workshops, etc. But. I'm very dif ferent from
most other educators, as I deal in subjects well outside of what the
mainstream is willing to cover. And of course, I have no one to answer
to, except my own conscience.

T'ma creature of the underground. It's a place where fruth and
lustice and genuine freedom are passionately struggled for. It's where
information is inspiring, empowering and free. The medium I work
mostly with is the zine. But theres also film, art, theatre and musi

These zines are ideally homemade, self-published baoklets, without
paid advertising or beholden o any corporation, which are free or very
cheap and anti-copyright, which means not only can they be copied
without approval, but it is encouraged. They can be about any subject
whatsoever. There are literally thousands upon thousands of zines
throughout the country and world. This zine here is called the Zine
Guide. They list maybe 2,000 different zines in here. I'm in here a
few places. Matter of fact, I'm making my way up the charts. My zine

Thought Bombs, is now the. 175th favorite zine. Lost year I was 196th.
T'm #95 according to fellow zinesters, peaple who write zines - those
peaple who really know about zines and who are my peers. Some zines
publish fens of thousands of copies. I only make maybe 300 of mine.
So, T expect to continue to gain recognition as more people become
aware of my work.

T've written twelve issues of Thought Bombs, seven Anti-Airport
Alerts, four In the Trenches... four ARA zines and a few others. T've
editted several more, mostly the work of prisoners. I runa zine distro
called The South Chicago ABC Zine Distro, which boasts about 120

nitles. Lalso carry many flyers, posters, essays and laminated artwork.

Anybody can create their own zine and have if reviewedbya 7
number of zine review publications. Most zines also review other zines
My eleven year old son, Stanton, draws all my covers and contributes
grophics and a few essays. There are tons of zines done by teenagers,
such as this Under 18 Zine and Besides the Animals: How animal
consumption affects your health, the environment and the starving.
These are very well-done and respected zines.

Before the Revolutionary War, Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet,
zine, called Common Sense. Tt served as a catalyst to galvanize the
forces fighting the British. What most people don't realize is that
‘Thomas Paine became disgusted by how the founding fathers wrote the
Constitution, because it codified and legalized human slavery. He went
off 1o France to fight in their revolution.

Today, human slavery in this country is still written into the
constitution. Prisoners, of which there are now 2,000,000 of in the
U.S., have no rights and may be used s slave laborers, legallyl One
third of all black men in their twenties are ensnarled in some part of
the injustice system either as prisoners, on parole or probation. The
figure is 56% in Baltimorell These numbers are several fies higher
than South African apartheid at its worstl

With a population comprising 4.5% of the world's population, the
U.S. none-the-less cansumes 30% of the world's resources - 6 1/2
fimes our share. Yet, the child mortality rate is higher in New York
City than it is in Guatemalal We live in a society of extreme capitalism
where everything is a function of the almighty dollar. This greed-
based society breeds alienation and despair as if in a petric dish.
Tgnorance is epidemic and a rainbow of addictions and self-destructive
behaviors are almost universal. The culture is a cesspool of the
celebration of violence and the sexual degradation of women. Racism is
rampant as is homophabia, immigrant bashing, etc. I call it the
“profanity of reality.” And who gets blamed for the quote *epidemic of
violence?* You guys dol The young people are the bad guys and are
increasingly being treated as criminals. Meanwhile, the U.S,
government sees o the death of 200 children under the age of five.
every single day in Iraq, due to the murderous sanctions imposed upon
them. It's a system of lies and madness, underscored with fear.

As the few are becoming billionaires, manipulating stocks and laws,
the many are facing destitution. The “booming economy* is *booming"
only for the already rich. You can't create wealth out of thin air or via
computer. Tt flows from the poor o the rich. You dor't hear about

any of this in the mainstream press or even in class, do you?

Americans also know precious little about the complex social and
political realities of other countries. It's mare than ironic that we may
know everything possible about a baseball team or ficticious Poké-Mon
characters, but we are almost totally ignarant as to how human beings
are being forced to subsist in this world.

That's where people like me come in. We're the canaries in the
minefield of political reality. We've crossed over the line of fear and
are willing o speak the truth in no uncertain terms. You've heard
about how Journalists around the world are being murdered and
imprisoned, threatened and silenced because of their reporting. Mumia
Abu-Jamal is a good example. Here's a brilliant, award-winning, black
journalist wha's been in death row for decades, framed for the murder
‘of a Philadelphia cop. They're trying to kill him because of what flows
out of his pen. He's an extremely insightful writer.

You see, the truth is a very dangerous thing 1o the authorities and
they spend countless billions hiding, distorting and suppressing

accept this risk because 1 know the people of this world are screaming
for the fearless truth. T've gained- quite a reputation. Here's a review

A few weeks ago I gave a presentation ot the College of Complexes
*the ployground for people who think.” My good friend and q
collaborator Jane Doe, introduced me. Here's what she said about me.

S0 you see, this is very serious business. The crystal clear truth is
highly revolutionary and the government hates it. I work with a lot of
prisoners. Almost every day, I get notices from prison mailrooms who
have censored my letters and zines, denying them to prisoners.
Sometimes, prisoners are thrown into the hole just for having one of
my publications mailed to them, which they never even see.

OK. Before I answer questions, I want to switch gears a little bit
and give you a quick lesson on how o make your own zine. They come in
all sizes. lorge, medium, digest, mini, micro and micro-miri. I fike the
digest size, because it uses standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper, which is the
quickest and easiest to photocopy. You get four pages on each sheet.
It's handy, readable and can be reread many fimes by others.

First, you create &/or acquire some material - text and graphics.
You reduce it to fit the format and cut it. Then you lay it ll out and
format it, edit it - actually craft your zine. Here's an example of an
original. Then you take your original and make a copy. It's now a
master. You have to go over your master with a fine tooth comb and
bottle of liquid paper o clean up all the lines. Then you can make
copies. You save a few copies with white covers. These are called
“flats." Then you collate, fold and stople them into finished zines.

Then you make your friends read them, start working together on
them, trade zines, start bands, work on projects, become active in your
community, network with other zinesters throughout the world, start a
collective. get a space and stock an infoshop to create your own
autonomous zone of living freedom, cooperation, mutual aid and
respect. The goal is to become completely free from the clutches of
the evil, lying murderous authorities and their endless restrictions and
disgusting bullying tactics, so as to enjoy a real life, lived moment by
‘moment, in the present. Of course, once you get a faste of real
freedom, you want to share it with others and help them fight for
social justice, down the street and around the world. Thankyou.

The years leading up 1o my seventeenth birthday in 1972 had of-
fered the escalation of the Vietnam War, the assassinations of
King and Bobby Kennedy, the riots in Grant Park during the
1968 Democratic Convention, Nixon's election, FBI wiretaps, the
Pentagon Papers, the murder of Black Panther Fred Hampion by
Chicago police, Kent Staté, and countless other frightening,
chaotic, and disillusioning events in America. The idea of trusting.
established institutions of authority, such as the police, schools,
government, the presidency, the military, religion—or even com-
munity, seemed impossible to many people my age. And my own
personal experience reflected this general sense of chaos, for my
community had crumbled under what appeared 10 be the weight
of its own moral, political, and religious hypocrisy. Nothing that I
could point to in what had once been my world seemed to suggest
that the alienation and depression I was feeling wasn't completely
Justified.

Stacking the Jury Il

Most peaple don't vote. They don't even bother to register. All
the candidates are liars and scumbags. The thought of involving
oneself in the government - in any capacity - is a repulsive thought, like
volunteering fo be infected with syphills. Its just something that you
avoid being a part of.

Similarly, people generally avoid dealing with cops. It's really a sign
of betrayal when someone "calls the cops” on someone they know or live
near. The police almost invariably make the situation much worse.
Sometimes you have to deal with them, like when they're right behind
your car Flashing their evil light show. uz, if you don't stop and let
them rip you off (at the very least) they may put a bullet through your.
heart, especially if you're talkin' fo your mema on a cell phone.

Some folks are just stone lazy - or just plain stoned - and won't
register to vote. Some don't want to be pestered by politicians and
their damned campaigns. Many others aren't allowed to vote because
they're convicted felons. Some are afraid to register for fear of being
arrested for a million dif ferent "crimes* like being “illegals" - as if how
the white man came here and siaughtered his way to residency was the
only way to “legitimate* citizenshipl

Other folks don' register to vote because they're afraid that if
they do, they will sooner or later be called into jury duty. And some
folks are anarchists who realize that government is organized crime
and should be eradicated like an infestation of cockroaches - my
apologizes to the cockroaches!

There's some connection to the jury duty thing, or at least, there
used to be. Juries were culled from voter registration rolls. Now I
believe they are dragooned from those who hold valid driver's licenses.

Whatever. The people who are pegged for jury duty have already
been subtlely selected by the prosecution. If youre an accused drunk
driver, you're not gonna get a “jury of your peers* because convicted
drunk drivers have already lost their licenses. Illegals wouldn't be
anywhere neara jury box, except as defendants, nor would marjuana
growers or anybady involved in anything “illegal.”

See, if you eat s0 much as a grope at the local food store, that's
illegal. But, if you rain high explosive bombs and kill hundreds, even
thousands of innocent civilians, that's not illegal. So, you can see what
a tough job it is for judges to weigh the scales of justice and
Gltermine who the guilty are. They're blacks.
Similarly, people who feel the government, police, the prosecutors |g-
and the gulag administrators should be the ones on trial, would also not
be anyway considered for jury duty. The last question, on the lengthy
(and personal) jury duty questionnaire reads something like this. “Do
you believe in the American form of government?" If you answer “"NOI"
‘they'll never bother you about.jury duty again. Trust me on this one. T
know!

The homeless aren't on juries. They don't have mailing addresses.
Neither are children. So, what you wind up with are a lot of WASPs -
“pillars of the community” - like copsl The well-to-do also serve on
juries and have a serious stake in keeping the system as it is. Juries
are given prosecution-slanted “instructions.” Sometimes, they're
sequestered - held against their will - like the O.J. jury, which (usually)
serves to hurry up convictions, regardless of guilf.

Poor pecple can't af ford real trials, with competent representation.
it casts alot of money. The prosecution has unlimited amounts of
money, for they have the resources of “the State.” Also, at least in
Illinois, public defenders the low lawyers on the greasy totem pole, are
deluged with cases and are subject to being sued, unlike prosecutors,
who can lie cheat, blackmail, frame, etc. with impunity from any kind of
legal reprimand. This is what is known as “judicial fairness," I believe.

S0 poor people accused of crimes must of ten settle for the
railroading that is the result of the collusion of the prosecution and
the judge, with the rubber stamp acquiescence of the incompetent
public defender. The jury does what the judge (and prosecution) tells
them to do. That's if they are even there! Almost always frials take
place with NO juries what-so-ever and cases are decided in judges
chambers, as “plea bargains.” This means guilty. The facts of the case
are irrelevant, for convictions are the product produced by this
factory. A finding of “innocent" s like a defectively manufactured
part ina factory and is useless. You can't make money off a person
who has been “let go if you're doing business in the prison industrial
complex. But you can still tag him for court costs, lawyers fees and
maybe a fine. But the body snatching will have to wait for the next
case. Once as a token finding of innacence is gotten out of the way,
the assembly line of convictions and decades-long sentencing can begin

* inearnest. Now, we're talking real money!

The working poor can't afford to be on juries because they don't
have living wage jobs with union protection and health care benefits
and a company that will pick up the difference in lost wages. Jury duty
only pays $17.50 per day. 5o, being a paycheck from the streets

anyway, these people have 1o beg of f of jury duty. If they must go, ||,
they usually sit around a big room with other “potential jurors* bored
out of their skulls, subject fo petty rules and restrictions, for the
entire working day and don't even get called to be interviewed for jury
duty.

Very, very few cases go to jury trial. I#'s time-consuming, the
courts are choked with cases and defendants have fo pay extra fo have
ajury trial. Lawyers and judges work to expedite as many cases as
possible in any given day. “Justice* isn't even a disguised sham,
anymore. It’s a cattle-carring of defendants fo inmates. It’s basically
come and get your number and prison location.

Blacks? On juries??? Yeah, right. The ones who aren't already
incarcerated or branded as ex-felons, won't be on juries. Many others
are overloaded with responsibilities like caring for their families’
children because many of their fellow parents are prisoners! Others
avoid court, fearful (with every reasonl) of being sucked into the
incarceration dragnet themselves! Some are given a chance, only o be
dismissed by the prosecution, if they show any questioning of the
system.

vorkers nationwide left their jobs to demand
an eight hour day. Chicago saw tens of thousanc

STAND has decided fo throw in the owel and stop fighting the
Peotone Airport. We have now put our complete faith in the wisdom of
IDOT. We think construction should begin NOW/ Please implement
eminent domain immediately,

Tt will be fun to watch our homes being dynamited - kinda like the
Fourth of July. After all these towns have only been around for 150
years or so, anyway. We're ashamed of ourselves for growing crops and
raising our children out here so selfishly.

We now think George Ryan, with his impeccable reputation for
integrity and honesty, should dictate our futures. Congressman Gerald
Weller is a staunch ecologist and will see to it that this mega airport
will pose no threat o the environment. We've seen the pro airport
conceptualization and are comforted that a raccoon would have no
qualms washing his paws in a nearby stream.

Those folks living near major airports who have formed groups to
seream and yell about air, water and noise pollution are crazyl As for
traffic congestion and gridlock, think of it this way. Isn't it the
perfect time 1o turn the knobs on your radio and check out all the
different stations?

Our children will gladly forego their future out here. If they want
a peaceful, quiet rural setting with plenty of places to play, ride bikes
and have fun, they can always move far away. What with email
nowadays, we can always feel close to them.

Our communities are *green grass sites” ripe for "development.”
No wonder we have never been asked for our input on all this! After
all, we're lowly locals who can't see the big picture and foolishly call this

Sure, the taxes will skyrocket, but so what? That money will find

speculators, bond holders, politicians and their pals. Those are the g
people who know what's best for all of us and we now know it!

For a while there, we were foolish enough o fout Gary-Chicago,
Rockford and the Milwaukee Airport as useful, existing satellite
airports for Chicagoland. Luckily, Beth Ruyle says these airports are:
0 good. Why take slightly used when you can have brand new? Look at
beautiful Mid-America International, down in Mascoutah. It's spotless!

The airlines claim they want nothing to do with Peatone. But just as
you throw us out, you can throw them inl After all,isnit this America?

We come hat in hand and ask the state to help us let everyone know
of our change of heart over all of his. Please do for us what you've
done for the grateful folks of Hopkins Park, down in Kankakee County,
where you are putting that wonderful womer's prison. Bus and
helicopter hundreds of outsiders who can be given *Yes” signs at the
big rally. Then the Governor can pop in for a nice quick photo op with
our children, who will be provided " Thankyou" signs, we hope.

Family Trip From Gary To Florida Sz

‘Well, we left our home in Monee Township at around 7:35 in the morning. We
drove down Pauling Road,which turns into Goodenow Road, a5 you go cast. At
394, we headed north to 1-80 East. The traffic was heavy coming from the east, but
‘was a breeze going into Indiana.

‘We exited at Cline Avenue North. A major expressway is being constructed
over this ramp. This ramp needs to be redone. It comes at you quickly and is kind
of beat up and severely curved.

‘We went north a few milles and I jumped the gun and got off on Route 20 East.
‘After & mile or 5o, I ealized that we took the wrong road, so I made a w-um and
ot back on Cline Avenue North to Chicago Avenue East. More and bigger signs
should be put on Cline Avenue to let people know which exit to get 6ff of to get to
the sirport. Surely, this mistake wasn't my fault!

From Chicago Avenue, it was easy to get o the Gary/Chicago Airport. You
simply follow the signs, tum into the airport and park your car. Parking is free and
the lot is well patrolled. It s a quiet, stress-free atmosphere. We were parked
‘maybe 100 yards from the terminal entrance.

‘We took our bags out and walked in about 820, The PanAm flight was
scheduled for 9 am. We checked our bags and received our boarding passes. Our
two young sons, Stephen aged five and Stanton aged 11, were very excited these
last several days. This wil be ther first airplane ridel We bought sweet rolls while
‘we waited to board. 1 set off the metal detector. I had some batteries in my jacket
s well as a tire gauge. They invited me to check the air on the plane’s tires.
Stanton set t off, too. He hed his gameboy in his pants pocket.

T asked Stephen bow he liked it. “I ke it 5o far.” Then, we boarded. The boys.
naturally wanted window seats, which they got. The plane was maybe 1/2 ful.
Stephen got a kick out of the tray. He and I opened and closed them several times
before take-off. The seating s three sbreast on either side of the aisle. There is
plenty of leg room between rows, which greatly impressed my wife, Leslie. This
plane had been modified to accomodate the New Orleans Saiots football team,
‘which involved taking out several seats and making the rest roomier. The whole
‘plane was first class and oot sectioned off. You are allowed up to two suitcases
each weighing up to 70 pounds and one carry on bag, which can be the size of a
small suitcase.

Pretty so0m we taxied towards the runway. The pilot, Kevin Kelly, introduced
the crew and gave us a bief weather report and flight pian. It was hot and dusty in
Ortando, we would be flying at 35,000 feet, it would take 2 bours, one minute and
fourteen seconds and they promised the “safest light ever” even though there may
be slight turbulence around Nashville, We have the tarmac 10 ourselves and there
are no delays. We begin our acceleration down the ruway and lit ot The boys
are thrilled. [t was 50 easy and smooth. This is a nice plane. How cooll Before
yYou know it, we're above the clouds and our ears are fecling funny. Leslie passes
out gum to help our ears pop.
It never ceases to amaze me to witness how man has platted this country into
squares. Even the woods are pretty geometic. Stephen puts on his shades. “Cool
shades - ONI” He looks like a child star. He's so handsome - ke bis brother. ¢
Having a beautiful mother doesn’t hurt, not that I'm partial.

‘The people who work the airport and plane are very friendly. The whole inital
phase of our trip has beea hassle-free and fn, unlike the packing and arrangements
making of the previous last few days.

Therel My ears just popped. We arranged for a rental car online from one of the
rental car agencies located at the Sanford Airport, which s located about fifteen
miles north of Orlando. This saved us fifty bucks! We will visit Florida for a week.
Our plan i to visit my folks in Port St. Lucie, my aunt and uncle in Bradeaton on
the Gulf coast and also my brothers down in Dade County. My father is facing.
serious cancer surgery and we wanted to be near him to enjoy his company (and that
of my mother) and tell them how much we love them.

Thear my wife laughing behind me. That warms my heart. The fight atendant
just handed us “warm towels.” Actually, they're warm, wet wash cloths. She uses
a pair of plastic pliers, 50 a5 5ot o touch them. They were rolled up cutely.

Tve been very busy lately (as always) and look forward to relaxing, going to the
beach and spending time with my famil. 1 brought two overstufed briefcases full
of books, zines, papers and notebooks. 1 hope 10 do a lot of reading and writing and
only some correspondence. I'm sure I'l be faced with a huge box full of mail upon
my retm. Il be able to keep up with the emal, at least.

‘There she goes, laughing again. She and Stanton are happy. Stephen's playing
with his gameboy. Lifo is sweet* I'm gooaa read. P.S. Here comes the beverage
trayl

T got coffee and a cinnamon roll. We're flying over Nashville now at 37,000
feet. I1's 65 degrees below zero outside and our speed is 578 mph. We'll be over
Atlanta in 15 minutes.

Stephen keeps opening the tray and kicking them closed. S0, we decide 0 joke
around. 1say, “Heyl Let’s g0 on a vacation!” Stephen says, “We are, sillyl Why
do you think we’re on an airplane?” “To get air?” I try to make him believe I just
saw a frog jump - ill stuff ke that.

1 pity all you poor Chicagoland suckers stuck somewhere in rush hour traffc
Pretty soon we'll be in Florida and I can show off my su-deprieved chicken legs.
‘We've decided 1o ask the captain (o tum around and go back because Stephen
forgot his Poke-Man cards. “C'mon, Dad. Let’s gol” “Let’s just have the drink

‘We're at Sanford Airport, which is much busier than Gary/Chicago, but also
smalish. As we wait for our luggage, Stephen climbs over a long row of chair, one
by one. We get our bags and pick up our rental car. We ordered a compact, but
they're trying o put us in bigger car for “ouly” $10 a day more. No thanks! We
drive off. 111 take us about 3 hours to get 1o Port St. Lucie, including a hach stop.
My wife was quite worried about the light, but it proves to be a breeze. The ¢y
airport was easy to get to, parking was free and close in. Check-in was quick and
simple. The crew was friendly and professional. The plane was roomy, the fares
were cheap and the flight was smooth.

1 didn't do much work, but I was abl to read a couple of books, do a ot of
visiting and check my email. 1 saw where the pro-Peotone airport crowd is
organizing a march and rally from Harvey to Homewood, set for March 18th,
clamoring for this boondoggle. Jesse Jackson Jr. and crew have a lot of the local
clergy up in arms too, as if thisis a social justice issue - the building of Peotone.

People in depressed areas need programs specifically designed to revitalize their
‘own communitis, not destroy farms many miles away. The root evils of
insttutional racism, severe capitalism and social disintegration are not addressed
and ths this mega sprawl project is looked upon as the cure for complex social ill.
Maywood, a mere five miles from O'Hare does not partcipate in the so-called
economic “boom.” Allthey see from O"Hare are countles planes, noise, pollution

I've received a very telling letter
addressed to Central Illinois farmers from a
lady living in Utah. detailing what has happened
to her toun after a major new “development”
invaded her community. In their case. it was a
corporate hog farm that promised “jobs: jobs
jobs™ which would stimulate this supposedly
depressed region.

Slouly the lies of an environmentally
harmless. community-oriented enterprise were
exposed as mere stories to get the hog farm
operational. through various legal hoops and
initially tolerated by the locals.

The community was destroyed. Oh. many
miserable jobs were made available: but now
life-long neighbors won't even look at eachother
much less talk to one another. The stench is
terrible and everywhere. It's a constant
reminder of the betrayal that they now feel was
so shamefully acquiesced to. The doors on the
houses are now kept locked. Small toun hominess
and little league life has disappeared -
overwhelmed by corporate greed-

It comes by many names - hog farm, third
airports must-have expressways: women's prison
or TIF-district warehouses. This type of
“prograss” is anything but progressive and such
“development™ ruins childhood. It's a future of
asphalts exhaust. semis, concertina wire. human
cages. armed guards: awful noise. traffic
congestion. destroyed faras and much profit-
taking. it's the death of human relations and a
surrendering to a commodified subsistence-

Our responsibility to our kids (and
ourselves) is to STAND up to fight -seriously
